6 units · 30 converters

Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. Decimal SI units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), the standard used by storage manufacturers.

Byte(B)

A byte is 8 bits and holds a single text character. It is the base unit for measuring digital information, from file sizes to memory capacity.

Kilobyte(KB)

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal SI convention used by storage manufacturers. Plain text emails and small configuration files are measured in kilobytes.

Megabyte(MB)

A megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes, or one million bytes. Photos, songs and PDF documents typically range from one to ten megabytes.

Gigabyte(GB)

A gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, roughly an hour of HD video or 250 songs. Smartphone storage, RAM and data plans are specified in gigabytes.

Terabyte(TB)

A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, the capacity of modern hard drives and the scale of personal media libraries. About 250,000 photos fit in one terabyte.

Petabyte(PB)

A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, a scale used by data centers, streaming services and scientific experiments. Large language models are trained on petabytes of text.
