Contrast checker
Accessible color decisions in seconds: enter a text color and a background color to get the exact WCAG 2.2 contrast ratio, pass/fail for every AA and AAA threshold, and a live preview of how the pairing actually reads.
- AA · normal text (4.5:1)
- AA · large text (3:1)
- AAA · normal text (7:1)
- AAA · large text (4.5:1)
- UI components & graphics (3:1)
Large text sample
Normal body text — the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Small text sample, like captions and labels.
Very small print.
What the thresholds mean
AA, normal text — 4.5:1. The baseline for body copy under WCAG SC 1.4.3. If your ratio is below 4.5:1, most users will struggle to read the text.
AA, large text — 3:1. Large text (at least 18pt, or 14pt bold) is allowed a lower ratio. UI components and graphical objects follow the same 3:1 floor under SC 1.4.11.
AAA, normal text — 7:1 and AAA, large text — 4.5:1. The enhanced-contract targets of SC 1.4.6, worth aiming for on long-form reading and small type.
The ratio is computed with the normative WCAG formula: relative luminance L = 0.2126·R + 0.7152·G + 0.0722·B (with the sRGB transfer function per channel), and contrast = (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the lighter color.
